As is usually the tradition, Deputy President William Ruto was not able to invite President Uhuru Kenyatta to speak during Madaraka Day celebrations. Instead President Kenyatta invited the visiting Sierra Leonean President to speak after which he went on to deliver his address.
The 59th Madaraka Day is President Kenyatta’s last national holiday address as the president ahead of the August 9 elections and therefore he may have wanted to keep campaign politics from the fete.
