Governor James Orengo urges ODM to resist sycophancy towards Ruto

Siaya Governor James Orengo has criticized a faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for their uncritical support of President William Ruto, urging party members to question the government’s decisions. Speaking during the memorial service for Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) chairperson Roseline Odede in Uyoma, Rarieda Sub-county, Orengo emphasized the need for the opposition to maintain its integrity and stand firm against any form of sycophancy.

“The law can never be suspended; we must adhere to the Constitution,” Orengo stated, drawing historical parallels to Adolf Hitler’s coalition government, which ultimately faltered. “Even if you make compromises, they must be principled. Do not be part of a praise and worship team; we must be steadfast.”

The governor expressed deep concern over the rising cases of abductions and extrajudicial killings in Kenya, calling on the government to take decisive action to restore order. “Kenya is crying out for an end to these abductions and killings so that we can truly be a republic. When too much sycophancy exists, people lose sight of their core principles,” he warned.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna echoed Orengo’s sentiments, urging ODM leaders within the government to speak out against the injustices occurring in the country. “ODM leaders in government must stop the sycophancy and call out President Ruto for the injustices happening in Kenya,” he asserted.

This call for accountability comes in the context of a recent ‘handshake’ between President Ruto and Opposition leader Raila Odinga, which saw four ODM leaders—Hassan Joho (Mining), Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives), John Mbadi (Treasury), and Opiyo Wandayi (Energy)—join the Cabinet. Since their appointments, these leaders have faced criticism for their apparent shift towards praising Ruto’s administration.
