The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has cancelled gubernatorial elections for Mombasa and Kakamega counties. The Commission has also cancelled polls in Kacheliba and Pokot South constituencies.
Speaking during a press briefing at Bomas of Kenya on 8th August, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati explained the decision followed the discovery of inaccurate details of candidates in the affected areas.
“We wish to inform the country that ballot papers for Kakamega county governor have wrong pictures of candidates and their details printed on them. Mombasa gubernatorial ballot papers had wrong pictures and details printed on them. The election in these positions has been suspended to a later date which will be communicated through a gazette notice,” said the polls body chair.
Chebukati said that only the gazetted candidates will appear in fresh ballolt papers which will be redone at the cost of the printing company Lykos. He also announced that the issue ballot papers being sent to wrong polling stations had been addressed. “The commission has since re-routed the ballot papers to the rightful places using air transport contracted to facilitate such emergencies,” he noted
