Kisumu Governor urges Chief Justice to Act on baby Pendo murder case

Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has called on Chief Justice Martha Koome to take immediate action regarding the long-delayed murder case of Baby Samantha Pendo, a six-month-old who was killed during post-election protests in 2017.

In a press statement released on Friday, Governor Nyong’o expressed deep frustration over the stagnation of the case against 12 police officers implicated in the infant’s death, labeling the ongoing delays a “blatant violation of human rights.” He emphasized the need for swift justice in a matter that has gripped the nation.

“I urge Chief Justice Koome to prioritize this case and ensure it progresses with the urgency it deserves,” Governor Nyong’o stated. He raised concerns about potential sabotage in the legal process, suggesting that certain individuals or groups may be obstructing justice to protect specific parties.

As the Interim leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, Nyong’o warned that continued dysfunction within the justice system might lead to international scrutiny under the Rome Statute. He indicated that he might seek intervention from the International Criminal Court (ICC) if local courts fail to make progress.

“We may be forced to reach out to the ICC if these delays continue, as justice delayed is justice denied,” he concluded, stressing the importance of accountability in this tragic case.
