Sarah Onyango Obama, the step-grandmother to the 44th US President Barack Obama died Monday morning in Kisumu Kenya according to the family. Mama Sarah died while receiving treatment for Diabetes at the Jaramogi Oging Odinga Hospita in Kisumu.
The 99 year old philanthropist rose to international fame with the 2008 election of her step-grandson Barack, who became the first black president of the United States. Through her Mama Sarah Obama Foundation, she promoted education for needy children especially girls and orphans.
She was the third wife of the former US president’s grandfather and helped raise his father, Barack Obama, Sr. The family is part of Kenya’s Luo ethnic group.
When Barack Obama landed in JKIA in 1987, he was welcomed by his extended family with Mama Sarah Obama, despite not being his biological grandmother, taking good care of him as well as Auma Obama, the daughter of Kezia and Barack.
Family sources say the former US president has received the information about the passing on of Mama Sarah and and is saddened by the news. The family also says that Mama Sarah will be buried before midday March 30th 2021 in line with the Islamic faith.
