There was a snarl-up in Mombasa Road in Nairobi for hours on Wednesday July 15 as rowdy youths claiming to be Kazi Mtaani workers took to the highway in protest no payment of their dues.
The youths mostly from the Mukuru Kwa Reuben areas near Mombasa stopped movement of vehicles on both sides of Mombasa Highway, and burnt tyres at the Doshi overpass next City Cabanas while protesting.
Kazi Mtaani is a program by the government to provide a form of social protection for workers whose prospects for daily or casual work has been disrupted by the containment policies put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.
The first phase of Kazi Mtaani focused on informal settlements in the counties of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kilifi, Kwale, and Mandera. These counties were hard hit by the first instances of COVID-19 and the subsequent cessation of movement policy initiated to contain the spread of the virus.
