Ugenya MP David Ochieng and his Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) party has defected from the Azimio One Kenya Coalition to President Elect’s Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Accompanied by former Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma and former Kisumu Senator Fred Outa, the MDG party leader was received at the President Elect’s official residence on 26th August where they signed a post election coalition agreement.
Ochieng who recently beat ODM candidate Daniel Odhiambo for the Ugenya constituency seat in a tight contest said his MDG party had found friendship in the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
In April 2019, Ochieng made history by defeating ODM MP Chris Karan after a repeat poll occasioned by a successful petition he lodged in court
The by election held on 5th April 2019 saw Daniel Juma Omondi of the Grand Dream Development Party emerge 3rd after Chris Karan followed by Brian Omondi of Third Way Alliance.
During the campaigns Ochieng had to fend off allegations that his campaign was funded by the then Deputy President William Ruto. After the polls Ruto sent his congratulatory message to Ochieng and his allies including Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi confirmed that Ochieng was Ruto’s candidate.
