Officials from the National Unity Platform NUP today held a Press Conference in Kampala where they disputed the results announced by the Electoral Commission and insisting that their Presidential Candidate Kyangulanyi Ssentamu had won the elections by a lot.
Earlier on Bobi Wine had told journalists “I am very confident that we defeated the dictator by far. I call upon all Ugandans to reject the blackmail. We have certainly won the election and we’ve won it by far.”
The NUP officials accused the Ugandan authorities of placing Bobi Wine under house arrest and challenged them to charge him in a court of law if he had committed any offence. The NUP later released the following Statement on behalf of Bobi Wine on its official Twitter handle;
“Ladies and gentlemen, members of our mighty party the NUP and all change seeking compatriots, I would like to take this opportunity after consulting with the senior leadership of the party to extend hearty congratulations to you all for the good fight you have put up.
This fight culminated in the massive vote for change countrywide which but for the rigging by the regime and its manipulated electoral commission, would have seen the back of the dictatorship and ushered in a new democratic Uganda.
Nevertheless, in keeping with our proven and consistent democratic credentials, our strategic goal should lie in remaining tall in order to protect our achievements and to consolidate and multiply them overtime
I … take this painful but nonetheless inevitable leadership decision of urging you to desist from any form of violence as we prepare to challenge the election outcome and its glaring imperfections through the courts of law for the sake of our long-term victory and for Uganda.”
