Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made a bold commitment to unite Kenyans in a concerted effort to challenge President William Ruto’s administration, aiming to reduce Ruto’s chances of re-election in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Since his impeachment last October, Gachagua has been a vocal critic of Ruto’s leadership. On Monday, he joined forces with opposition figures Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa during the inauguration of Wamalwa’s new DAP Party headquarters in Nairobi. “We are part of this team and will walk this journey together to liberate this country,” Gachagua declared. He emphasized the need for sacrifices to ensure that Ruto serves only one term.
In a surprising shift, Gachagua has begun forging alliances with former political rivals. Last weekend, he visited Martha Karua, the leader of NARC Kenya, who was Ruto’s opponent in the 2022 elections as Raila Odinga’s running mate. Gachagua brought traditional gifts—goats, sheep, and farm produce—symbolizing goodwill in Kikuyu culture. During their meeting at her Gichugu home in Kirinyaga County, the two leaders pledged to collaborate in recruiting more allies to challenge what they labeled Ruto’s “dictatorship.”
Gachagua has also been hosting a series of consultative meetings with leaders from various sectors at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County. These discussions are part of his strategic planning as he charts his political future and seeks to build a formidable coalition against the current administration.
As the political landscape shifts, Gachagua’s efforts signal a potential reshaping of alliances in Kenyan politics, setting the stage for a heated contest in the next presidential election.
