The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) today revoked the nomination of the Umoja Summit Party of Kenya Walter Mong’are who was the first presidential candidate to be cleared to contest in the the upcoming August elections.

Mong’are had been summoned to appear once again before the commission to clarify on his educational education after the Safina Party candidate Jimi Wanjigi was disqualified for failing to present his degree certificate. According to Wanjigi’s lawyer who was also his running mate Willis Otieno, Wanjigi had completed his studies and was only waiting to graduate and he cited the example of Nyambane who was cleared under similar circumstances.

“As the Returning Officer for the Presidential Election, upon discovery of new information on Walter Onchon’ga Mong’are’s lack of academic qualifications, I invited him to appear before me today at 2.00 pm to clarify the issue. He failed to honour my invitation and pursuant to Regulation 43 (2) (c) of the General Elections 2012, I hereby revoke the nomination certificate of Walter Onchong’a Mong’are of Umoja Summit Party dated 2nd June 2022.” said Chebukati.
