Kitui County Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu can smile again following the withdrawal of her impeachment motion that was set to be tabled tomorrow at the Kitui county assembly.
The majority leader of the county assembly Mr. Peter Kilonzo withdrew the motion this evening in unclear circumstances. In a letter to Ms Ngilu seen by Nyanza Daily, the Kitui County Assembly speaker George Ndoto said “This is to inform you that due to unavoidable circumstances, the motion mover has called off the tabling of the motion referred to in my letter under reference. The same was due for tabling on the floor of the house on Wednesday 15th July, 2020. We undertake to invite you in good time and inline with the County Assembly standing orders once the mover gives us his intention to table the said motion.”
Sources told Nyanza Daily that some MCAs who were supporting the motion went missing and it cannot confirmed whether they were kidnapped or they intentionally stayed away from the public to avoid the impeachment that was scheduled for tomorrow. The governor had previously gone to court to stop the impeachment motion against her arguing that it would infringe on her constitutional rights.
However, Justice Weldon Korir dismissed the case and rules that the members of the Kitui county assembly were free to go ahead with the motion since they were just exercising their constitutionally mandated oversight roles.
The impeachment motion supported by 40 out of 56 MCAs, accuses Governor Ngilu of failure to account for public funds amongst other accusations.
