Investigations over Fire incident at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport underway

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of a fire that broke out at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Friday evening. The blaze primarily affected grassland areas towards 75 Airport North Road, raising immediate concerns among onlookers and passengers.

Emergency response teams from various agencies, including the Kenya Police, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), Kenya Defense Forces, Kenya Pipeline, Nairobi County Government, G4S, and KK Security, were quickly mobilized to manage the situation. The fire, which produced large plumes of smoke visible along Airport North Road, raged on into the night.

As news of the fire spread, many passengers took to social media to express their anxiety, especially given the lack of immediate statements from the KAA. However, the authority reassured the public later that evening, confirming that the fire was confined to non-operational grassland areas and did not affect any critical airport infrastructure or operations.

“All airport activities, including flight schedules, passenger processing, and cargo handling, continued to function without interruption during the incident,” KAA stated in a release just after 9 p.m.

Fortunately, the fire was successfully contained without any reported injuries. According to the National Police Service, the fire ignited at approximately 6:30 p.m., and investigations have commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the outbreak. Authorities are working in collaboration with other security teams to determine a full account of events.
