The County Government of Vihiga is building a centre for the homeless children and victims of gender-based violence in Vokoli, Sabatia Sub-county.
The women representative Vihiga County Ms Beatrice Adagala, who is coordinating the project said that it aims to address the increase in the number of cases of GBV in the region.
The construction that began in July and whose first face is expected to be completed early next year, is funded by the National Government Affirmative Action Fund.
The centre will have offices, dormitories, and an ICT centre. There will be training facilities to provide the victims with technical skills during the rehabilitation .
The records provided indicate that 41 defilement cases have been recorded between the month of January and April. Teen pregnancies are also on an upward spiral, a trend that is worrying.
“There are many cases of violence and abuse of minors, both boys and girls. We even have cases of adults reporting abuse. This will serve as a rescue centre and a home, ” said Ms Adagala.
