The government is set to commence the distribution of huduma number cards by the end June next year, according to Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho.
An estimated 37.7 million Kenyans registered for the huduma number and are set to receive the cards.
Kibicho told the parliamentary committee that close to 10 million Kenyans failed to register for the service, adding that they will get a second opportunity for the same. A section of Kenyans boycotted the registration that took place last year between the months of April and May.
Mr. Karanja noted that the process for merging user data is on going and close to 14 million users data have been merged and are awaiting adjudication.
“We have been directed to do another phase of mass registration. Kenyans who missed out have an the opportunity to be registered,” the PS told the National Assembly Committee on Delegated Legislation at the Nairobi Hotel.
The data collected touched on users details for the National Hospital and Insurance Fund, Kenya Revenue Authority, National Social Security Fund and the National Identification Cards.
The PS remarked that the government had settled on Huduma number after it came to light that Kenyans identification process had been infiltrated by criminals.
“We have come up with a tight security document that will be hard to forge. It is a chip that stores data of the person who registered for the huduma number,” he said. The PS further added that about 90 fingerprint experts are involved in the process of merging data.
