A tragic incident in Khartoum has resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people after a Sudanese military transport plane crashed into a residential area. The army-aligned health ministry reported the crash, which occurred on Tuesday night near Wadi Seidna air base, one of the largest military installations in Omdurman, northwest of the capital.
The Antonov aircraft went down during takeoff, leading to casualties among both military personnel and civilians. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has escalated since April 2023, has contributed to the tragic circumstances of the crash.
The rivalry between army commander Mohamed Hamadan Daglo and other leaders has turned former allies into adversaries, exacerbating a situation that the United Nations has labeled one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with tens of thousands of lives lost.
The ongoing fighting has devastated Khartoum and other major cities, displacing millions and severely damaging critical infrastructure. While the army has made some advances in central Sudan and the capital, the conflict shows no signs of abating.
