ICC prosecutor Karim Khan arrives in DRC as violence escalates

Karim Khan, the prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC), has arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) as the country faces a surge in violence, particularly in the eastern region. This visit comes at a time when the Rwanda-backed M23 group has recently captured two significant cities, strengthening its presence in the area since resuming hostilities in late 2021.

Upon his arrival in the capital, Kinshasa, Khan expressed deep concern over the escalating situation, stating, “We are extremely worried about recent developments in Congo; we know the situation, particularly in the east, is acute.” His visit highlights the international community’s focus on the ongoing crisis in the region.
