The embattled UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned on July 7 following the resignation of his key ministers and other top officials.
Johnson said said he would stay on as a caretaker prime minister until his replacement is chosen by his party. “It is now clearly the will of the parliamentary conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new Prime Minister and I have agreed with Sir Graham Brady the chairman of our backbench MPs that the process of choosing that new leader should begin now” Said Johnson after failed efforts to cling to power.
Johnson’s government has been on the spotlight following a wave of resignations after the PM apologized for not realizing that Chris Pincher, a former minister for pastoral care, was unsuitable for a job in government after reported cases of sexual misconduct were reported against him.
Pincher resigned from government last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but the prime minister had been warned against him in 2019. Ministers who resigned over the latest scandal said they lost confidence in Johnson’s ability to govern in the national interest.
Trouble started for Johnson after the “partygate” scandal that exposed Johnson’s inner circle breaking covid-19 rules by holding alcohol fueled parties while UK residents faced restrictions from socializing or even visiting dying relatives. The 58 year old former journalist and mayor of London has spent months battling to maintain his grip on power and recently survived a no confidence motion by his conservative party parliamentarians.
The outspoken prime minister and Member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip will be remembered for securing a withdrawal agreement that facilitated Brexit after failed efforts of his predecessors.
