The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended all thirty one fleet Modern Coast Buses from operating on Kenyan roads after the grisly Nithi river accident that left 34 people dead and 10 others injured.
NTSA Director General George Njau has announced a thorough multi-agency investigation and an evaluation of the operator’s safety operational standards is currently underway.
The accident occurred when the Mombasa-bound bus plunged into the river, about 40 meters down, killing 20 people on the spot. with six others pronounced dead on arrival in hospital. As at today the death toll had risen to 34.
According to the wife of the driver of the ill fated vehicle, her husband had complained that the bus had serious mechanical problems including breaks. She also said her husband had stayed for several months without receiving salaries.
