Kenya moves to regulate AI amid misuse concerns

The Kenyan government is set to regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI) to harness its economic potential while addressing risks associated with its misuse. This initiative is part of the draft Kenya National AI Strategy for 2025-2030, which aims to position Kenya as a leading African nation in AI utilization.

Central to the strategy is the encouragement of local data labs, designed to train youth on AI benefits. A public awareness campaign will focus on AI rights and combat misinformation to prevent misuse. Stakeholders and civil servants will also receive education on responsible AI practices, crucial for fostering a skilled workforce.

The draft comes amid rising concerns about AI misuse among Kenyan youths, especially those generating controversial AI images related to political dissatisfaction. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen condemned this trend, warning of potential repercussions for offenders. He urged parents and church leaders to curb such behaviours, emphasizing the need for accountability in social media use.

This regulatory effort reflects the government’s commitment to maximizing AI’s potential while ensuring the safety and order necessary for a peaceful society.
