Migori County Assembly turned chaotic ahead of the tabling of governor Okoth Obado’s impeachment motion.
Nominated MCA Mary Ogodo was assaulted amid the fracas that left her arm broken after a fight flared up in the assembly and has since been rushed to St Joseph Mission Hospital.
“She is in hospital, her left arm has been broken and she is receiving treatment. She can’t talk right now. She is in stable condition,” an aide told a local daily.
Reports indicate that drama started after North Kanyamkago MCA George Omamba obtained court orders reinstating him as Deputy Speaker on Tuesday evening.
The MCA was impeached in May alongside assembly clerk Tom Opere. Bukira East MCA Mathews Chacha and Emmanuel Abala took over the positions, respectively.
Tensions rose later when five pro-Obado MCAs led by Kaler MCA Thomas Akungo disrupted the morning session.
“The five MCAs were hiding in one of the offices in the assembly controlled by Obado’s relative before they made their way into the assembly and started creating chaos,” a county employee told the daily. The motion against Obado has flopped three times but ODM Party leadership is confident it will sail through.
The impending ouster has seen the party resort to intimidation tactics especially against Assembly speaker Boaz Okoth. Mr. Boaz has hinted at claims that his life is in danger thanks to the impeachment motion.
The motion which was supposed to be tabled on Thursday failed to take off, again due to “technicalities”, minority leader in the National Assembly John Mbadi told a local daily.
“The reason as to why we have the delay is simple; it is a legal process which our lawyer is looking at,” he said.
