Stalemate as Mike Sonko denied Clearance for Mombasa race

There was standoff in Mombasa as former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko unsuccessfully presented his application to be nominated to vie for the upcoming Mombasa gubernatorial race.

Sonko and his supporters engaged the Mombasa Retuning Officer Swalha Yussuf who insisted that an earlier High Court ruling lifting the order barring the IEBC from clearing the Governor, did not direct them to clear Sonko. According to the IEBC, the order had indicated that the polls body had the discretion to clear Sonko.

IEBC had on Saturday disqualified Sonko from the gubernatorial race citing his earlier impeachment as governor of Nairobi.
