Nyamira County Governor John Nyangarama dies in Nairobi Hospital

Nyamira county and Kenya at large is mourning the sudden passing on of governor John Nyangarama who died this morning at the Nairobi hospital. Nyangarama, 74, was taken to the hospital three weeks ago when he tested positive for coronavirus.

His death was confirmed on Friday morning by the County Secretary Mr. James Ntabo, who intimated that the family is set to move the body of the late governor to the Lee Funeral Home. “We have lost our governor but we will release more details after the family has settled. Information on the cause of his death will be conveyed by the family spokesperson.” Said James Ntabo.

President Uhuru Kenyatta sent his condolences to Nyagarama’s family and described the deceased as a distinguished and true servant of the people whose contribution to the development of the tea sector in Kenya and service to the people of Nyamira County shall be dearly missed.

The Head of State eulogized Nyagarama, 74, as an approachable and kind leader who carried out his duties with diligence.

“As a nation, death has robbed us of a gifted leader whose primary mission was to transform the lives of the residents of Nyamira through his County Government’s development initiatives. “At the national level, we shall forever be grateful to Governor Nyagarama for his contribution to the growth of our country’s tea sector, where he worked for many years and left an impressive track record of success before joining active politics,” the President said.

The second-term governor and former long-serving Kenya Tea Development Authority director is among many other leaders who have contracted coronavirus and ended up in hospital.

Nyagarama becomes the fourth governor in the country to die in office since 2013. Under the Kenyan law, in the event of the death of a sitting governor, the deputy governor takes over office for the rest of the term.
