The Scottish National Party (SNP) has nominated Mr. Sam Ochola who is a Kenyan by birth to contest in the upcoming council elections schedule for Thursday 5th May 2022. Mr. Ochola has paired with Mr. David Cameron to vie for Kingswells, Sheddocksley and Summerhill ward with more than one councillor to be elected per ward.
The forthcoming Aberdeen Local Government election for Aberdeen have attracted a total of 99 candidates competing for the vacant 45 councillors’ seats to be elected in 13 ward areas.
According to SNP Aberdeen group leader Alex Nicol, the SNP have declared themselves the only political party ready to “take control” of the council after naming enough candidates to claim a majority should all the 23 SNP candidates get elected.
A graduate of the University of Aberdeen BEng (Hons), Civil Engineering, Ochola who hails from Kisumu county becomes the 1st African, not only in the city but North Scotland to be nominated to contest elections on a mainstream party. He is competing with other Conservative party candidates in the affluent suburbs of the Kingswells, Sheddocksley and Summerhill ward.
Ochola who is a father to a teenage daughter has been a resident of the Granite City for the past 15 years.
Unlike election to Westminster Parliament which is simple first part the post. Local elections are complex using Single Transferable Vote (STV). Designed by London to block SNP from sweeping the boards.
Aberdeen is the second largest city in the UK with a GDP of £11.4bn which is around 17% of Scotland’s GDP.
