Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has announced that Miraa Exports through the Isiolo Airport will resume in two weeks after the new administration lifted the ban imposed by former President Abdulahi Farmajoo.
Speaking to the media on arrival from Mogadishu where he had accompanied President Uhuru Kenyatta at the inauguration of Somali President, Munya said he held meetings with his Somali counterparts and finalised the deal which will also see Kenya importing fish from Somalia.
Munya said a delegation of Somali government officials will be in Kenya soon to sign the agreement.
The development has come as good news to Meru residents who were affected by the disruption of miraa export to Somalia which was their most lucrative export market.
Isiolo North constituency MP aspirant Mwenda Thuranira applauded the government for the intervention and for the suggestion that miraa will be transported direct from Isiolo International Airport saying his will again boost the economy and create job opportunities for the Isiolo people
“We welcome the opening of miraa market in Somalia, after the intervention of President Uhuru and CS Hon Peter Munya It will boost back the economy of the people of Meru and Isiolo, which has been the source of income for most of Isiolo residents.” said Mwenda.
