The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched investigations targeting Esther Wanjiru Chege, Accountant, Kenya Rural Roads Authority, with 13 properties worth KES.100M suspected to be proceeds of corruption. On 19/07/22, High Court froze her bank account which has transacted KES. 26.4M from Jan 2016.
According to a statement posted on EACC website, Wanjiru is linked to several private companies registered through proxies and relatives which have reportedly been trading with her employer, KeRRA. The EACC investigation focuses on alleged conflict of interest, embezzlement of public funds and unexplained wealth.
“EACC has noted an increasing trend where public officers are directly or indirectly doing business with the institutions they serve. Conflict of interest is part of the procurement-related corruption which accounts for almost 80% of the vice in the country.” say the statement
The anticorruption by further says no Accounting Officer should preside over embezzlement of public funds in their dockets and have issued warning to boards of state agencies that they are duty-bound to enforce accountability in the utilization of public funds to ensure that Kenyans get value for money in all public expenditures.
