Meru Senator Murungi Kathuri elected Deputy Speaker unopposed
Immediate former governor of Kilifi Amason Jeffa Kingi has been elected new Senate Speaker after getting all 46 votes cast after the walk out by Azimio senators.
Kingi’s votes surpassed the vote surpassed the two-thirds threshold of 45 votes.
Meru Senator Murungi Kathuri was elected unopposed as Deputy Senate Speaker following the withdrawal of Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo’s candidature for the seat.
Kingi’s election followed the announcement of the withdrawal of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka from the race at the last minute. “For the position of the Speaker of Senate, the following seven candidates were validly nominated as at the close of the nomination period; Issac Aluochier, George Bush, Karuri Fredrick Muchiri, Kingi Amason Kefa, Kinyua Beatrice Gathomi, Kuria George Njoroge and Musyoka Stephen Klaonzo,” said Senate clerk Nyegenye.
Kingi was born in 1974 in the Magarini constituency in Kilifi County, four years before Kenya’s founding father the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta passed away. In 1980, he began his primary school education at Magarini Primary School before he proceeded to Alliance Boys High School from 1989 to 1992. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Nairobi and a diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
