MPs seek salary increase amid economic struggles

In a controversial move, Members of Parliament are pushing for a pay rise from Ksh. 725,502 to Ksh. 739,600 per month, despite the economic hardships many Kenyans face.

During parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, MPs approved the appointment of new commissioners to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), urging them to act impartially. The newly appointed team includes chairperson Sammy Chepkwony and members Dr. Gilda Odeya, Jane Njage, Leonid Ashindu, Geoffrey Omondi, Martin Kizito, and Mohamed Abdi.

This push for a salary increase has ignited public outrage, with many condemning the MPs for prioritizing their own financial interests. One critic questioned, “How can you justify a pay raise while many earn hundreds of thousands, and a common mwananchi struggles?” Another highlighted that some civil servants earn less than Ksh. 35,000 monthly.

Online commentators expressed their frustration, claiming that “97 percent of all MPs deserve much less, if anything at all,” attributing the country’s economic woes to their actions.

Kenyan MPs are already known for having significant perks, ranking as the second-highest-paid lawmakers globally, according to the UK’s Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
