President Ruto announces KSh150 million bonus for Sugar farmers

On January 20, 2025, President William Ruto unveiled a historic KSh150 million bonus for sugar farmers supplying cane to Kakamega’s Mumias Sugar Factory, marking a significant first for the industry. This initiative is viewed as a testament to the successful reforms in the sugar sector and aims to enhance farmers’ livelihoods.

During the event, President Ruto noted that Kenya produced a record 832,000 tonnes of sugar last year and is on track to achieve surplus production by 2026, opening doors for regional exports. “Sugarcane cultivation is becoming a viable and rewarding venture,” he asserted.

He detailed the government’s measures to revitalize the sugar industry, including the cancellation of KSh117 billion in debts and settling KSh1.7 billion in farmers’ arrears. The newly enacted Sugar Act 2024 will further improve the management of sugarcane supply and operational efficiency.

To ensure fairness in bonus distribution, Ruto announced that 50% of annual bank rent would be allocated to farmers based on their cane supply. Additionally, he plans to increase subsidized fertilizer distribution from 700,000 to one million bags this year to boost productivity.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to delivering on the Kenya Kwanza manifesto promises, including affordable housing and universal healthcare. He called on politicians opposed to the new Social Health Authority to engage constructively rather than mislead the public.

The event was attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, and other key leaders.
