Chief Justice Martha Koome’s security detail reinstated after public outcry

Chief Justice Martha Koome’s security detail, withdrawn abruptly on Thursday, has been reinstated following significant public backlash. Justice Stephen Radido, President of the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA), confirmed on Friday that the officers had been reassigned to her, condemning the National Police Service (NPS) for what he termed an overreach and improper interference by another government branch.

Radido criticized Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja’s rationale for the withdrawal, which cited the need for training and promotions. He emphasized that due process should have been observed, including notifying the Chief Justice in advance.

In response to the uproar, IG Kanja explained that the officers were either sent for training after being promoted or transferred to different stations as part of standard procedure. He admitted that poor coordination resulted in a security gap, as the departing officers left before their replacements arrived.

The removal of the security detail triggered protests nationwide, with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and opposition figures denouncing the action as an attack on the Judiciary. Many Kenyans voiced their concerns on social media, underscoring the need to protect judicial independence.

The reinstatement of Chief Justice Koome’s security reflects a strong public sentiment regarding the safeguarding of judicial officials. This incident underscores the ongoing tensions between government branches and the vital role of public opinion in influencing policy decisions.
