Doctor’s Union calls for more Recruitment of Local Medics

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) has called for the recruitment of more medical personnel.

Speaking to the journalists today in Nairobi, the acting Secretary General Chibanzi Mwachonda said that there is need to hire 50 doctors in every county to reach a total of 2,350 doctors in the whole country.

Chibanzi claimed that  Covid-19 has so far affected more than 500 workers and that the gap should be filled early enough to avoid shortage of healthcare workers. He added that KMPDU has a database of 1,000 workers who are willing to serve the nation.

The union also expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision of the government to bring on board Cuban doctors at the expense of hiring the local ones. He concluded that the focus should now shift to the overstretched workforce in the healthcare system if the country is to successfully deal with the pandemic.

The Union has given the government through the ministry of health two weeks to employ more medics.
