Nairobi County Speaker Beatrice Elachi has resigned from her seat barely two years after her appointment. Elachi tendered her resignation in the morning of 11th August 2020 through a live television citing life threatening incidences in many occasions. “For the last few days there have been life threatening incidences. I did not have to wait to see somebody die in office. I am a mother,” she said.
This resignation follows many assembly wrangles that have threatened to bring the operations of Nairobi County to a standstill since the transfer of power from Governor Sonko to the Nairobi Metropolitan Service.
Speaker Elachi has been at the center of the protracted power battle between Governor Sonko and General Badi with many people alleging that the speaker had a soft spot for the new leadership, something which has never gone well with Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko.
Her deputy speaker Mr. John Kamangu who is also the Member of County Assembly for Ruai will take over her position in an acting capacity.
