In a decisive move to address ongoing management challenges at Moi University, the Ministry of Education has appointed Prof. Noah Midamba as the new Chairperson of the university council. The announcement was made by Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba in a gazette notice dated January 17, 2025, which also dissolved the existing council members.
Prof. Midamba, who previously served as Vice-Chancellor of KCA University for over ten years before his departure in 2021, will assume his role immediately and serve a three-year term. The notice stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) of the Universities Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints Noah Midamba (Prof.) to be Chairperson of the Council of Moi University, for a period of three (3) years.”
The new appointments include Prof. Ronald Wasike, Dr. Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Dr. Edward Sambili, and Anne Weceke Makori, while the roles of Dr. Humphrey Kimani Njuguna, Prof. Clara Samiji Momanyi, Christopher Khaemba, Eusilah Jepkosgei Ngeny, and Susan Amlango Aletia have been revoked.
This leadership change follows a week of strikes by university staff, who protested the administration’s failure to honor agreements within the Return to Work Formula. In December, CS Ogamba pledged to tackle management issues and ensure accountability, stating, “We are prepared to take necessary actions for transparent governance in our universities.”
