CHAN 2025 rescheduled: New dates announced for African Nations Championship

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the new dates for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will now take place from August 2 to 30, 2025. The tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, was originally slated for February but was postponed to allow the hosting nations ample time to prepare their facilities.

The announcement came after a recent meeting of the CAF Executive Committee in Rabat, Morocco, chaired by President Dr. Patrice Motsepe. In this year’s tournament, Kenya finds itself in Group A, competing against two-time champions Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia.

Historically, DR Congo and Morocco each boast two titles in this championship, while Senegal, the reigning champions, will defend their title in Group D alongside Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria.

Tanzania, another co-host, will participate in Group B, facing off against Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic. Meanwhile, Uganda is set to encounter Niger, Guinea, and two additional teams in Group C, which will be determined following the completion of the qualifying matches.

It’s noteworthy that Libya and Tunisia have withdrawn from the tournament, reportedly due to complications with club player releases, which have affected their domestic leagues.

To fill the vacancies in Group C, two teams will be selected after a series of additional qualifiers featuring Algeria, Comoros, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, and South Africa. The schedule for these qualifiers is yet to be confirmed.

In a broader announcement, the CAF Executive Committee also revealed that the Women’s Futsal Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Morocco from April 22 to 30, 2025, with the top two teams earning spots in the FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup in the Philippines. Additionally, starting in 2025, the CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations will expand its participation from 12 to 16 teams
