Distress in Kisumu County after 22 Health Workers test positive for Covid-19

Kisumu county Department of Health has raised concerns after twenty-two health workers tested positive for the Corona virus.

Following this discovery, 105 workers have been quarantined to help contain the spread. Kisumu has so far recorded 631 Covid-19 cases.

Despite the rise of the corona virus cases, most residents are still unmindful of the measures put in place to curb the spread of the virus, operating without masks and disregarding social distancing.

Speaking yesterday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, the county’s Deputy Governor Mathew Owili said the infection of health workers was a digress of efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

The Deputy Governor spoke while receiving a consignment of Personal Protective Equipment worth Sh.7.7 million from the European Union ambassador to Kenya Simon Mordue and Sarah Mohammed Kenya Red Cross Secretary General.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital has until now screened 160,000 cases since the outbreak in March. Out of this data 89 tested positive, three have died and 79 recovered from the virus.

The hospital CEO Peter Okoth noted that there was need for more PPEs for the 1,000 workforce.

He further added that the facility uses roughly 7,000 surgical masks in one week hence the increased demand.
