Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has publicly criticized Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu for what he describes as an unjust three-hour detention at Julius Nyerere International Airport. Owino’s experience has raised eyebrows and sparked concerns over diplomatic relations between Kenya and Tanzania, particularly regarding the treatment of Kenyan representatives abroad.
In a heartfelt statement, Owino expressed his disappointment, stating, “When President Suluhu visits Kenya, we embrace her as a friend. Yet, when I, as a sitting member of Parliament, travel to Tanzania, I am met with frustration and disrespect. This behavior is unacceptable.” The MP emphasized that he feels like a persona non grata in Tanzania, suggesting that his freedom of movement has been unjustly curtailed.
In light of this incident, Owino has taken formal action by writing a letter to President Suluhu, demanding an explanation for the treatment he received and clarity on why he is being barred from entering Tanzania. “As a representative of my constituents, I need to understand why my ability to conduct business and represent the interests of my people has been compromised,” he stated.
The detention of Babu Owino not only raises issues of personal affront but also highlights the broader implications for Kenyan citizens traveling to Tanzania. His call for transparency and respect for diplomatic norms aims to ensure that such incidents do not become a pattern, urging both governments to foster a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
As the situation unfolds, many are left wondering how this will affect the relationship between the two nations and the treatment of their lawmakers across borders.
