Orange Democratic Movement’s Fernandes Baraza has been elected the second governor of Kakamega county.
Baraza defeated Amani National Congress’s Cleophas Malala by garnering polling 192,929 to 159,508 in the mini elections held by the IEBC on 29th August 2022.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) postponed the election twice after candidates pictures were wrongly printed in the ballot papers.
Although there was low turnout, Barasa won in all the constituencies in the southern region and two others in the northern region, while Malala who is aligned to the President elect William Ruto won in all constituencies in the central and northern regions.
Malala conceded defeat and pledged to support Barasa to deliver for the peole of Kakamega. “We wish to thank the residents of Kakamega county for believing in our leadership and voting resoundingly for brand Cleo Malala. I congratulate governor elect, Fernandes Barasa and his team for their win. It is deserved and undisputable,” He said.
He lauded the IEBC for conducting a free, fair, credible and verifiable elections saying not all losses are losses, some are lessons. “Time is high for Kakamega County residents, regardless of their political side to rally behind the Governor for the county to realize her full socio economic potential. We live to fight another day,” He said.
