The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has cleared former Prime minister Raila Odinga to run for President in the upcoming August 9th General elections. Accompanied by his running mate Martha Karua and scores of leaders from the Azimio coalition, the ODM expressed confidence in the IEBC’s capacity to hold free and fair polls and challenged to let Kenyans freely express their will at the ballot.
He also called on his supporters not to deface billboards of his opponents in an indirect swipe at developments in Bomet a UDA stronghold where his billboards were vandalised.
The ODM leader then tweeted a message to Kenyans saying, “Dear Kenyans, @MarthaKarua and I are now officially candidates. It’s now all systems go, the journey to unite and positively transform Kenya continues. Join us in Azimio. We shall keep our promises to Kenyans. #Inawezekana”. Raila then briefly addressed a gathering at the Undugu grounds and then left for Nakuru for an Azimio rally.
This makes Odinga the 5th presidential candidate to be cleared for the race after Walter Mongare (Umoja Summit Party), Prof. George Wajackoyah (Roots Party), David Mwaure Waihiga (Agano Party), and William Ruto (United Democratic Alliance).
