Safaricom opens up mpesa pay-bill to Airtell and Tellkom customers

Mobile phone provider Safaricom has opened up its mpesa Paybill system to subscribers of Airtel Money and Telekom Kenya’s T cash enabling seamless mobile money payments regardless of network.

According to Central Bank of Kenya, the launch of paybill interoperability will allow customers to make payments at supermarkets, restaurants and other vendors regardless of the network.

This development is expected to open up the mobile money market which is dominated by Safaricom’s M-pesa.

Latest statistics show mpesa controls more than 90 % of mobile money transactions in the country followed by Airtel Money and Tcash.
