US President Donald Trump has been dealt another blow following the decision by both Tweeter and Facebook to block his accounts to incite the violence that saw his supporters disrupt congressional sessions at the US Capitol on 6th January 2021.
These sanctions came in the wake of the president using the two platforms to express false claims that he massively won the election and that it was rigged in favor of president-elect Joe Biden.
“We made the decision that on balance these posts contribute to, rather than diminish, the risk of ongoing violence,” stated Facebook.
As a result, Facebook disclosed that it would issue President Trump “a 24-hour feature block” so that he does not continue posting fake contents.
Twitter had on Wednesday blocked the outgoing president as it threatened to ban him permanently if he continues to break its rules by spreading false news on rigging. “As a result of the unprecedented and ongoing violent situation in Washington, D.C., we have required the removal of three @realDonaldTrump Tweets that were posted earlier today for repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy,” said Twitter adding that they have locked the account for 12 hours
Facebook also removed a short video by President Donald Trump in which he repeated false accusations about the integrity of the presidential election. According to Guy Rose, Facebook’s Vice President on Intergrity, the video “Contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence” hence the removal.
“This is an emergency situation and we are taking appropriate emergency measures, including removing President Trump’s video,” Rosen said on Twitter.
YouTube also announced the removal of the Trump video for spreading false claims about election fraud.
