Justice for George Floyd as Court finds Derek Chauvin guilty of murder

The court on Tuesday found former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering the late George Floyd.

The 12 judges found Derek Chauvin guilty on all three charges he faced namely second-degree murder, unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Following the ruling, thousands of people celebrated in unison the verdict including the proponents of the black lives matter.

Further, Derek Chauvin was denied bail and was led from the court in handcuffs. He will be sentenced in the next eight weeks.

According to Nzherald, the maximum sentence for second-degree unintentional murder is 40 years’ imprisonment. The maximum sentence for third-degree murder is 25 years’ imprisonment. The maximum sentence for second-degree manslaughter is 10 years and/or US$20,000.

A medical expert in Derek Chauvin’s murder case revealed that the late George Floyd died due to lack of oxygen resulting from being pinned facing downwards with hands cuffed behind him.

According to Dr Martin Tobin who is a lung and critical care specialist at the Edward Hines Jr VA Hospital, the late could not take in enough oxygen while on the ground leading to abnormal heartbeat and brain damage.

“Mr Floyd’s breathing while he was being held down by Chauvin and other officers was too shallow to take in enough oxygen, which in turn damaged his brain and caused an abnormal heart rhythm that made his heart stop.” said Dr Martin Tobin.

This verdict comes in the wake of President Joe Biden calling for the right verdict to be made so that the family finds justice after losing their beloved one.

“They’re a good family and they’re calling for peace and tranquility no matter what that verdict is. I’m praying the verdict is the right verdict. I think it’s overwhelming, in my view. I wouldn’t say that unless the jury was sequestered now.” Said Biden.
